Customer Success Story with Neptune DXP

Introduction: Modernizing Wihuri Metro-tukku’s SAP Processes

Over the past couple of years, Wihuri Metro-tukku and Neptune Partner Vincit have executed numerous development projects together. Projects included developing mobile solutions used in regional transport terminals, installing information screens on forklifts used by pickers, and completely renewing the process of receiving incoming deliveries. Throughout the process of developing these new digital solutions, one important focus was kept at the forefront, the end user’s experience.

Wihuri Metro-tukku is a wholesale business that delivers products for professional kitchens and retailers in the food service industry. It is a family-owned business that has been in operation for over 120 years. With customer service top of mine, Wihuri Metro-tukku was ready to bring their SAP processes into the 21st century.

“Our most important mission is to deliver the products customers need at the right time and to the right place,” explains Anton Heinonen, the Production Manager at Wihuri Metro-tukku.

Mobile apps for logistics processes in regional transport terminals

The first project Vincit and Wihuri Metro-tukku worked on was the regional transport terminal project. These apps, developed on Neptune DXP, enabled Wihuri Metro-tukku’s regional transport terminals to handle cross-docking and flow-through material flows. Developing this solution on Neptune DXP allowed the application to be user-friendly while seamlessly flowing data into their SAP ERP system.

Unfortunately, this project had to be executed during the lockdown due to the global pandemic. Because of this, the team faced some unique challenges during the implementation stage and while going live. However, they were able to easily navigate these challenges because end-users had been included in the development stage, meaning they were already familiar with the product. This helped lead to their successful implementation.

This project was one of Wihuri Metro-tukku’s biggest projects in recent years. With the successful go-live of a mobile solution that was light and easy to use, they were ready to move on to their second project.

“We used to pick all the products at our logistics center in Vantaa, but now it is partly done at our regional transport terminals. With the app, we can receive incoming deliveries, pick them up and combine orders. With the help of this mobile solution, we can offer our clients a better order-pick rhythm, more locally produced goods, and fresher produce,” Heinonen continues.

Views that support voice-controlled picking in the warehouse decrease the number of mistakes and increase customer satisfaction

Wihuri Metro-tukku’s second project was focused on easing the workload of the pickers to improve the quality of picking. Since their first project with Vincit was so successful, it was an easy decision to continue their partnership.

“Because the regional transport terminal project went so well, it functions as the best kind of reference for Vincit to get to do other projects as well,” states Heinonen.

Together they developed a software to support voice-controlled picking. The software is used on forklifts where information screens have been installed. The app offers pickers new ways to ease their work, including adding pictures and product information. It also provides more specific instructions related to the picking. In addition, the app enables open communication between the pickers and the management.

“With the info screens, we have been able to decrease the number of mistakes made. This has a direct impact on customer satisfaction,” Heinonen summarizes.

New mobile apps with an easy-to-use interface for receiving incoming deliveries from suppliers

Most recently, Vincit and Wihuri Metro-tukku worked to renew the process of receiving incoming deliveries. The goal of this project was to make the interface used by the reception workers more dynamic and user-friendlier. That is why they executed this project utilizing Neptune DXP. As a result, it is now more versatile, and users can do numerous things within the same app during the same session, all while seamlessly integrating data into SAP.

Heinonen states, “The key elements for this project were the Neptune DXP user interface and Vincit’s project team. We aimed to increase the productivity of the reception workers by developing this process with apps built on the Neptune DXP launchpad. We already had numerous positive experiences with them in previous projects, so we knew this was the right solution.”

Receiving incoming deliveries has a central role in the flow of the products in Wihuri Metro-tukku’s warehouse. Any possible mistakes that happen at this stage recur during the whole flow. Therefore, by focusing on the process of receiving incoming deliveries, they were avoiding any future errors.

Success is a team effort!

According to Heinonen, all projects they completed with Vincit have started with a high-quality specification of the issue. This has enabled them to create realistic schedules and budgets for each project. In his opinion, the solutions are easy to use and represent modern standards.

“As we have successfully delivered multiple projects together, there is a tremendous amount of trust and cooperation, which has resulted in an atmosphere where innovation and creation are done cohesively, resulting in triumphs,”

“By working as a team with Vincit, creating apps powered by Neptune DXP, we have become more cost-efficient and have strengthened our position in the market. We get more done in the same time frame,” Heinonen sums up.
